Kicking Off Our Technology Initiative: A Device for Each Student

We are excited that each student will have access to his/her own technology device this year!  As you recall, primary students will have their own iPad and intermediate students will have either a lap top or a chrome book.  This week all students in grades K-5 learned how to use these tools in a safe, appropriate manner and they showed their spirit while doing it!  Students wore crazy socks as they learned about how they leave lasting digital footprints.  Other important topics included writing an appropriate message and not sharing personal information.  The lessons shared across the grade levels this week will ensure students have a positive, safe experience this year.

District & Town Partner on Guard Rail on Chambers Road
SAC Chair, Bruce Martin, and I met with representatives from the District and the Town of Parker to discuss the expansion of Chambers Road.  The proximity of the road to the top of the playground was a theme shared by parents.  The District and Town were receptive to the needs of our school community and they agreed to partner on a 600 foot guard rail.  The rendering below depicts where the guardrail will sit above the playground.  Gold Rush thanks the SAC, Town of Parker and District for their continued efforts to ensure students' safety.

THANK YOU GRE Families!
We are excited that our new shade structure for the front playground was completed this week! The shade structure, concrete and tables were made possible through our school's annual fun run, commonly known as the Digger Dash.  We thank the PTO for organizing the Digger Dash and our students and families for raising the money that made our structure possible.  We are looking forward to formally celebrating the contribution with students at this year's Digger Dash student kick off assembly in early September!

Additional Safety Measures During Drop Off & Pick Up
The school consulted with the Parker Police department regarding drop off and pick up procedures. The police agreed that placing a cone near the main cross walk to block a second car lane would appropriately slow cars down at this critical juncture.  Next week you will see a cone at this location before and after school.  We are also asking all parents to cross with their child at the main cross walk and not walk in between cars in the loop.  As always we appreciate your cooperation!

1:1 A Technology Device for Each Student
Gold Rush is excited to have a technology device for each student! Students in grades K-2 will have access to iPads and intermediate students will have either chrome books or laptops. While this device will not replace quality instruction from the classroom teacher, it will enhance the curriculum and promote student engagement.

We are excited to kick off this initiative next week with a spirit week! Throughout the week students will be learning how to use technology safely. Students will be learning how to be digital citizens and gain and share information appropriately. Each day students will have an option to dress up according to the theme of the day. Click here for the spirit week flyer.

Moving to 1:1 is also an opportunity to teach responsibility.  Your child will receive a copy of a District device contract early next week. Please review the student agreements with your child and return a signed copy to his/her teacher.  The agreements below ensure students’ safety and prevent devices from damage. We are excited to use technology more in the classroom this year!

Opening Flag Ceremony
We enjoyed kicking off our first day of school with our opening flag ceremony!  We loved seeing our students and parents shine.  A special thank you to parents Leah Shafer, Donald Kaelin and Darren Rahn! Thank you also to Biff Gore!

It was a great first day of school!

Students Give Back
Four students thought about how they could make a difference with the money they raised from their lemonade stand this summer and Gold Rush was the first place that came to mind.  Levi, Jaden, Aiden and Myles wanted to give back to GRE by donating their profits.  The boys are excited to fund additional playground equipment with the money they made.  We thank the students for their thoughtful contribution and making our school an even better place!

Go For the Gold Assembly
Students reviewed what it looks like to Go For the G.O.L.D. in an assembly Friday.  Kids watched students' videos highlighting what Giving respect, Owning your actions, Listening and Learning and Doing your best does and doesn't look like  throughout the school.  Students also discussed opportunities that lie in tackling problems head on after reading the book What to do With a Problem.

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to all 3rd and 5th grade students on September 12 - 14.  This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates.  The result of these tests will serve two functions.  First and foremost, the scores will be used to inform instructional practices in the classroom.  The scores will also be used as ONE component to determine gifted programming.

Testing will take place in the morning, and we ask that you avoid scheduling appointments during the testing window.

Elective testing for students can be done at grades 1, 2 and 4.  If your child demonstrates the need for advanced programming, you can request he/she be tested on those same dates.  Please contact Kristi Barta, our Gifted and Talented Facilitator, by August 20th, if you would like more information or if you would like to request testing (303-387-7711 or kjbarta@dcsdk12.org).
