Thanksgiving Feast & Celebrations of Learning
It was great to see many families at our Celebrations of Learning and Thanksgiving Feast!  We served over 750 meals.  We enjoyed sharing the learning that we've done this year using technology and sharing a meal together.

S.T.E.A.M. Lab
Our S.T.E.A.M. Lab is now open!  S.T.E.A.M. stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.  All students will be able to program robots in the lab in the coming months.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students to collaborate and problem solve with their peers.  It is also an opportunity for them to think critically and apply math concepts as they program their robots to perform different tasks.  For example, this week fifth graders had to problem solve how to move robot Dash 1/2, 1/4 and then a 1/3 of a meter.  Our fifth graders have started exploring the lab and they are excited about learning in this way.  We cannot wait for students in all grades to also have the opportunity.

We love to recognize our outstanding Gold Rush teachers and school staff for the amazing job they do with students every day.  Click here  to nominate your favorite teacher, administrator, educational assistant, office staff or other staff member.  The nomination window will remain open through January 13, 2017.  For more information about Apple Awards click here.

Student Lead Collaborative Games
Students lead collaborative games during our first indoor recess this week.  This was a great opportunity for student leadership and it resulted in a calmer and more engaging recess for all kids. Thank you Christy Schwalick for training students on these games.

THANK YOU PTO!
We had an exceptional fall book fair, which directly benefits our school's library.  We thank the PTO and our many parent volunteers for making our book fair possible.  A special thank you to Stephanie Zimmerman and Angel Zayaz.

Lost and Found
Just a reminder to check the lost and found for anything that may belong to your student. All remaining items will be donated to charity during winter break.

Students Enhance Others' Learning
Third grade students created an in house field trip for all members of our school.  Their self-guided rocks and minerals museum was an opportunity for them to share their understanding of science with others.  Those visiting the museum used their iPads to access information about the unique properties of different rocks and minerals and how they are best used.

Second graders used their iPads to provide feedback on their classmates' writing.  Students referred to their grade level rubrics to provide targeted comments regarding the quality of their reasoning and their ability to convince them.

Teachers Design Rich Mathematical Tasks
During our professional development day our staff defined our collective beliefs about math and created rich mathematical tasks.  As a school, staff identified the following as core values:
·      That ALL students can learn math and think critically.
·      That ALL students need opportunities to engage open ended tasks that require deep thinking.
·       That ALL students need the opportunity to explore ideas and question before they are directly taught concepts.
·      That we must celebrate mistakes and honor the learning that comes from those mistakes.

Thanksgiving Feast & New Celebrations of Learning

We celebrate Thanksgiving as a larger school community by hosting a Thanksgiving feast for students and their families.  Our feast will be held on Wednesday, November 16.  The cost per parent and sibling is $4.00 per person.  You are able make a reservation online now by clicking here.  Gold Rush students will pay using their lunch accounts.  Please bring your printed receipt as your meal ticket .

This year we are inviting families to the classroom 30 minutes prior to their feast time to celebrate their child's learning.  Some of students' work will showcase learning they've done using their own technology device.
