What Is Math?
Gold Rush teachers had the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field of mathematics.  Jo Boaler spoke about what math looks like in the real world.  She stated that math was not about speed or answering questions with only one right answer.  While many of us do not think about math as a creative subject, she shared mathematicians really visualize what the math represents, use several strategies to solve problems, and justify their reasoning.  As educators and parents we can further students’ deep understanding of math concepts by asking the following probing questions:

·      How do you know your answer is correct?
·      Why does your answer make sense?
·      Why does your strategy for solving the problem work?
·      Can you make a visual representation of your thinking?
·      Can you solve/draw your solution in a different way?

Gold Rush teachers with Jo Boaler.  Stanford professor and author of Mathematical Mindsets.

Thinking Deeply About Reading
Students at all grade levels practice the following thinking strategies to comprehend what they read:

·      Creating Mental Images
·      Determining Importance
·      Making Connections to Self, to Texts and the World
·      Questioning
·      Inferring
·      Synthesizing
·      Monitoring Comprehension

As adult readers we use these same strategies to understand complex text.  This week kindergartners were drawing mental images they created as they read.  They discussed how they used certain details from the book to draw their pictures and how their pictures helped them understand what was happening.  Second graders were working on determining the most important information from the story.  They were analyzing the events from a story to determine the author’s message.

Wish Week
Students had a fun time this week as they participated in Legend High School’s Wish Week!  Students were excited to dress up in the same theme as the older students.  We were excited to raise money to support a student in need.

Supporting Our Own - Barnhart Family
While we are supporting a child through Legend High School's wish week, a need within our own school community has arisen.  As you may be aware, the Barnhart family tragically lost their home in a house fire.  Many people have already sprung into action to help this GRE family, including our PTO.   If you are also interested in helping, we are currently collecting gift cards to grocery stores, restaurants, target etc.  Donations can be left with the front office.  We send the Barnhart family our thoughts as they navigate through this difficult time.
