Inventor's Time
Kindergartners are putting their knowledge of simple machines to the test, as they create inventions.  After reading about simple machines and creating them out of Legos, students are developing their own inventions that include one or more simple machines.  Students created a variety of tools including elevators, water filters and wishing wells.  Their creativity and application of simple machines is impressive! See student samples below.

Young AmeriTowne
Fourth grade students are learning about communities and financial literacy as they prepare for Young AmeriTowne.  Students simulate a community when they visit Young AmeriTowne in April. This week students ran for elected positions.  They gave persuasive speeches to their peers about why they should be elected town judge and mayor.  Students also interviewed with parents for other identified positions, such as mechanic, police officer and dj.  Students did a great job communicating why they were qualified for a given job.  We are impressed with their persuasive dialogue and creativity!

Valentine's Day Fun!
We had a wonderful time spreading kindness this week!  Fourth graders made breakfast and Valentines boxes for others and students in all grade levels participated in a door decorating contest and kindness challenges.  We look forward to continuing to demonstrate kind acts throughout the school and community by Going for the G.O.L.D., or Giving respect, Owning our actions, Listening and Learning and Doing our best!

Updates from the S.T.E.A.M. Lab
Second and third graders used robots Dash and Dot to practice math concepts.  Third graders used the robots to create as many polygons as they could with the same perimeter.  Students first created their shapes on the floor using masking tape and meter sticks.  They then used the robots to "walk" the perimeter to ensure they were the same.  Second graders played Capture the Kingdom.  The goal of this game is for Dash and Dot to land on, or capture, the cards that totaled the highest sum.  Students were required to collaborate, strategize and add with this activity.  Students in both grade levels enjoyed learning math in this engaging manner!

Math is More Than Memorizing
Research shows that high achieving math students see math as big ideas that are connected, rather than a set of procedures to be memorized.  Brain science affirms that students that are better at memorizing information do not have higher math abilities.  Jo Boaler asserts "we need students [in math to] ask good questions, map out pathways, reason complex solutions, set up models and communicate in different forms" (Boaler, 2015).  Gold Rush is excited to explore instructional practices that allow students to learn these research based math concepts this Friday during our Professional Learning Day.  Click here for Boaler's full article.

Spreading Kindness
We are excited to spread kindness next week!  Students will be sharing kindness quotes, participating in a door decorating contest and completing a kindness challenge.  We are excited to spread good deeds and cheer to others.

Technology Enhances Literacy
Students are using technology to further their learning in the area of literacy.  First graders are using See Saw to provide students with feedback.  Students are referring to writing checklists as they provide targeted suggestions.  Students are also applying the reading strategy of determining importance while reading nonfiction text online.  Students are analyzing what they read and identifying the most important information.  We are impressed with students' level of reflection and application!

A Furry Visitor Supports Reading
Students are sharing stories with an unique visitor - a certified reading dog!  Students have enjoyed building their fluency, or ability to read in a smooth, accurate and expressive manner, with their furry friend.

Planning for Next Year
It is hard to believe, but we are already starting to plan for next school year!  Please complete our Registration Survey .  If your plans have changed since you initially completed the survey, please complete the survey a second time.  Your information allows us to plan accordingly.

Thank You PTO
