Valentine's Day Fun!
We had a wonderful time spreading kindness this week!  Fourth graders made breakfast and Valentines boxes for others and students in all grade levels participated in a door decorating contest and kindness challenges.  We look forward to continuing to demonstrate kind acts throughout the school and community by Going for the G.O.L.D., or Giving respect, Owning our actions, Listening and Learning and Doing our best!

Updates from the S.T.E.A.M. Lab
Second and third graders used robots Dash and Dot to practice math concepts.  Third graders used the robots to create as many polygons as they could with the same perimeter.  Students first created their shapes on the floor using masking tape and meter sticks.  They then used the robots to "walk" the perimeter to ensure they were the same.  Second graders played Capture the Kingdom.  The goal of this game is for Dash and Dot to land on, or capture, the cards that totaled the highest sum.  Students were required to collaborate, strategize and add with this activity.  Students in both grade levels enjoyed learning math in this engaging manner!

Math is More Than Memorizing
Research shows that high achieving math students see math as big ideas that are connected, rather than a set of procedures to be memorized.  Brain science affirms that students that are better at memorizing information do not have higher math abilities.  Jo Boaler asserts "we need students [in math to] ask good questions, map out pathways, reason complex solutions, set up models and communicate in different forms" (Boaler, 2015).  Gold Rush is excited to explore instructional practices that allow students to learn these research based math concepts this Friday during our Professional Learning Day.  Click here for Boaler's full article.
